Ordinary time in the secular world

Out of diapers. Again. Off to Wal-Mart. On a Sunday. Yuck. Armed with a short list that will take me the length of the store (why do they do that?) I decide to swing by the toy aisles to see if I can find the stuffed bugs and/or armadillo Dear Daughter has requested for her birthday. Across from the stuffed animal aisle next to all the garden implements is a row of Christmas decorations. In September.

Apparently, the Christmas season runs from right after Labor Day to December 26 for secular retailers. Sometimes I wish there could be holy Catholic communities with Mom & Pop stores following the liturgical calendar and selling things that make it easy for the rest of the community to follow the liturgical calendar as well. I guess if there were such a Catholic community we wouldn't be truly "in the world" as in "be in the world, not of it."

Congratulations on the new blog!

Wal-Mart on a Sunday.....the thought gives me the willies. (Actually I had to do it myself this week-end. Not only do I not like dragging myself through commercial establishments on Sunday, it seems that most of the population of Northern Illinois is crowded into our Wal-Mart on a Sunday afternoon. I needed a nap when I got home.) And yeah, we were looking for the no longer existent school supply 'mega-aisle.' It had morphed into Christmas land......yech.

Shopping anywhere in the C-U area during the weekend is a mess. All the wacky people seem to come out at the same time! I remember desperately needing something for a recipe on the Saturday morning of dorm move-in. I felt like I was surrounded by people with "cart-rage".
It's strange how they arrange stores now days. They always seem to put the necessaries, like milk and cheese, in the back of the store. I know they want you to buy more than you want, but seperating the cheese and meats is just a pain the behind.
Stuffed bugs? That is an interesting request, especially for a girl. Good luck on your search!

Welcome to you and your blog!

I personally avoid WalMart at all costs -- too much insider information, I guess. I won't spend a dime there if I don't have to and I usually don't.

For the stuffed bugs/armadillo request, consider your local children's museum or zoo gift shop. I find the best (and most unusual) birthday gifts there, and I know I've seen soft-sculpture bugs at the museum that were actually quite beautiful and realistic-looking.

"'I guess if there were such a Catholic community we wouldn't be truly "in the world" as in "be in the world, not of it.'"

and unfortunately, you'd still be out of diapers. on a sunday.

:D

course in a catholic community you'd be sure to find a spare somewhere in the neighborhood.

your children are lovely! God Bless.

My age is showing. I used cloth on all my kids, and if I were out of diapers I would use a towel, (hand towel size) pinned and folded - or even sometimes a receiving blanket. My pack of disposable diapers was on hand for emergency use only (like a broken down washer, no dryer, and rain).
There was an interesting article I read somewhere about how the development of the disposeable diaper industry affected the supermarket in terms of shelf space and marketing. I will have to see if I can find it.
I try not to shop at all on Sunday, lately. I am trying desperately to honor the Sabbath and keep it Holy, and that means more than just going to Mass. It was actually easier when all the kids were at home to just stay home and rest. But if I am truly out of a staple I will stop at the store. But Wal-Mart on SUnday is one of the rings of purgatory in my estimation.
