Four Witnesses

What was the early Church like? Contrary to popular belief, Rod Bennett shows there is a reliable way to know. Four ancient Christian writers - four witnesses to early Christianity - left us an extensive body of documentation on this vital subject, and this book brings their fascinating testimony to life for modern believers. With all the power and drama of a gripping novel, this book is a journey of discovery of ancient and beautiful truths through the lives of four great saints of the early Church - Clement of Rome, Ignatius of Antioch, Justin Martyr, and Irenaeus of Lyons.

The unity of philosophical experience

The best summary of this book is in the authors words from the forword: "It is the proper aim and scope of the present book to show that the history of philosophy makes philosophical sense, and to define its meaning in regard to the nature of philosophical knowledge itself. For that reason, the various doctrines, as well as the definite parts of these doctrines, which have been taken into account in this volume, should not be considered as arbitrarily selected fragments from some abridged description of the medieval and modern philosophy, but as a series of concrete philosophical experiments especially chosen for their dogmatic significance. Each of them represents a definite attempt to deal with philosophical knowledge according to a certain method, and all of them, taken together, make up a philosophical experience. The fact that all those experiments have yielded the same result will, as I hope, justify the common conclusion...that there is a centuries long experience of what philosophical knowledge is and that such an experience exhibits a remarkable unity."

A Dictionary of Plant Lore

Book Description
Why do the Welsh wear a daffodil on St David's Day and the Irish a shamrock for St Patrick? Why do we send flowers to weddings and funerals or kiss under the mistletoe? From elderflower tea (`a universal panacea') to lesser yellow trefoil (the true shamrock), from corn dollies and crop circles to plants which forecast the weather (pennywort and scarlet pimpernel), this dictionary is a vivid and colorful account of British and Irish plant-lore. It is written by one of the world's esteemed botanical and folk lore authorities.Synopsis
Offering a vivid and colourful account of British and Irish plant-lore, this dictionary answers questions such as why the Welsh wear a daffodil on St David's Day and the Irish a shamrock for St Patrick, and why we send flowers to weddings and funerals or kiss under the mistletoe? From elderflower tea ("a universal panacea") to lesser yellow trefoil (the true shamrock), from corn dollies and crop circles to plants which forecast the weather (pennywort and scarlet pimpernel), this dictionary covers them all. It also includes: superstitions and herbal remedies; folksong and children's games; and folk-names in use today never previously recorded.

The Spirit of the Liturgy

Considered by Ratzinger devotees as his greatest work on the Liturgy, this profound and beautifully written treatment of the "great prayer of the Church" will help readers rediscover the Liturgy in all its hidden spiritual wealth and transcendent grandeur as the very center of our Christian life.In his own foreward to the book, Cardinal Ratzinger compares this work to a much earlier classic of the same title by Romano Guardini because Ratzinger feels that his insights here are similar with what Guardini achieved in his time regarding a renewed understanding of the Liturgy.
"My purpose here is to assist this renewal of understanding of the Liturgy. Its basic intentions coincide with what Guardini wanted to achieve. The only difference is that I have had to translate what Guardini did at the end of the First World War, in a totally different historical situation, into the context of our present-day questions, hopes and dangers. Like Guardini, I am not attempting to involve myself with scholarly discussion and research. I am simply offering an aid to the understanding of the faith and to the right way to give the faith its central form of expression in the Liturgy."
My only gripe with Ignatius Press is that they don't include Library of Congress Cataloging-in-Publication data for the books they publish. This information came from the online library catalog of the Catholic University of America.
