Just curious if anyone has any ideas for Math curriculm for Visual Spatial learners. These children do not learn well by rote so the typical repetitive drills do not work well for them. I think most of the Laura Berquist recommendations will be fine for my son, but I'm not so sure about Saxon Math. Any other curriculum to recommend??
FYI, my son is 9yo and going into fourth grade.
Posted by Johnna Horn at June 4, 2004 09:41 AMI've had similar trouble w/my visual learner in math. It didn't help that it was pounded into her head while she was in first grade (parish school) that she was "bad" at math because she couldn't perform well on those timed drill sheets.
I've been looking at some programs recently, as well as reading up on how to teach these types of learners. I would recommend backtracking a little bit (as far as grade-level stuff) and try to get your hands on some little gems by Ruth Beechick...her 3 R's series. There is a small, thin boolet "An Easy Start in Arithmetic" which gives practical advice for teaching math to children in grades K-3.
Anyway, she states that there are different levels that children move through, and some move at a slower pace. They start off in the "manipulative" stage (working w/actual items to do the four basic functions). At some point, they are then able to transition to the "mental image" stage, where they can picture in their minds those "manipulatives" (a group of 3 apples and a group of 2 oranges together are five fruits). Lastly, they transition to the "abstract" stage, which is actually our written math in symbols (3+2=5).
While I've read that the earlier Saxon math (K-3) programs make good use of manipulatives, there is a radical change when you get to Saxon 54. I have the book in my home and we've not been able to use it w/much success (and we didn't start w/Saxon). So, I'm changing to another, much less expensive program.
Basically I'm starting at the beginning w/Ray's Primary Arithmetic. It is a reprint of an OLD (like late 1800s) math program that has a heavy emphasis on oral lessons (using manipulatives to help teach the concept). Beechick wrote a Teacher's Guide that accompanies the program through the 8th grade. You can get all the books (Primary through Higher, which takes you from simple counting all the way to starting geometry) and the Teacher's Guide for less than one Saxon math program. The publishers are Mott Media. They are non-consumable books.

Some days, all we would get done was math because we were both physically drained. Then I switched to Math-U-See. They still have the drill that Saxon offers, but paired with manipulatives which combine tools similar to Cuisinaire rods and Base 10. The tears have gone and my son likes doing math. In first grade, my son's teacher had 'math champ' drills every day where the kids would have to get up at the board and race to get the facts done. So, all year long he was the last one finished. I remember watching him at the parents' day and feeling so sad. It really started him off on a bad foot, but hopefully we can change that now.
