It would seem that...

Protestant children memorize Scripture, while Catholic children memorize prayers.

Catholic children memorize scripture, too, they just don't realize that it is in the Bible. Through frequent listening to and participation in the Mass (at least in the vernacular) vast quantities of scripture are memorized.
Also our children learn lots of scripture by listening to the readings, but they don't always have the 'address' (chapter and verse) to quote back when challenged.
