Thirty years ago, when I was in high school, I wouldn't say teen culture was especially kind. But no one would stoop to picking on a kid with one leg. (And we had a classmate who lost a leg to cancer and eventually died.)

Usually poorer or recently moved to the area or non-conforming in some way or another. I don't like thinking about those times, especially if I put myself in the victims' place.
